There is currently no evidence stating that certain foods can help treat Infertility. However, males and females attempting to become parents should consciously consume nutrient-enriched foods that improve their fertility quotient and overall health.
Dr. Nisarg Patel of Nisha IVF Bopal, Ahmedabad, a leading IVF specialist states, ‘Infertility is best resolved through ART. However, patients with healthy food habits and lifestyles have a better success rate in becoming parents. Therefore, consumption of foods that boost fertility is certainly required but within limits and/or should be done under medical advice.’
Dr. Nisarg Patel and his team of IVF specialists share a list of foods that could enrich the body with essential nutrition.
Sunflower Seeds
Sunflower seeds contain vitamin E, folate, zinc, selenium, and omega-3 fatty acids. Their consumption improves sperm count and motility, and DNA fragmentation. Hence, they are recommended to men as well as women. The best way to consume them is to include them in a trail mix, snack on them, or sprinkle them over salads.
Citrus Fruits
Citrus fruits boost fertility. Incorporating limes, oranges, and tangerines, full of antioxidants, is a good idea. High in vitamin C, these fruits aid in keeping and controlling hormones in the body. They also help keep menstrual cycles regular and better ovulation. It is best to enjoy citrus fruits on their own or as juices and smoothies or include them in a fruit salad.
Matured Cheese
Mature cheese contains polyamines, especially polyamine putrescine, a natural protein important for the sperm health and health of the female egg in women aged 35 and above. Hence, it is advisable to consume aged cheddar, parmesan and Manchego, and other varieties of mature cheese to improve reproductive health. However, look out for allergies and different unhealthy food reactions related to the consumption of cheese.
Cheese is best eaten raw or along with salads, nuts and fruits. Patients should consume cheese in limited quantities as it is fat-laden, calorie-rich food.
Beans and lentils
Legumes provide a good amount of dietary fiber and folate, which are instrumental in keeping hormones in balance. Moreover, lentils have a high concentration of spermidine, a substance that can potentially promote sperm’s ability to fertilize an egg.
Furthermore, these protein-rich vegetables may help with ovulation. Studies indicate that substituting 5% of the calorie intake of red meats and poultry with vegetable proteins reduces the likelihood of Infertility due to anovulation by more than half.
Lentils and beans can replace meat-based meals, cheese or meat in salads.
Egg Yolks
Egg yolks are a great source of iron, calcium, zinc, vitamin B6, folate, and vitamin B12, and they contain all the egg’s vitamin A. Eggs from free-range chickens also have a plentiful amount of omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA and fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and vitamin K2. Not to mention, eggs are an economical way to get lean protein, which research has shown can be a booster for fertility. There is also the potential for choline in eggs to reduce the risk of certain birth defects, although some studies have not found this true.
Yolks have been under a cloud for a while due to considerations about dietary cholesterol. Still, more recently, nutrition specialists have recognized the yolk for its beneficial balance of protein and fat. Patients should consume an entire egg, including the yolk, and there are many delicious egg recipes to try out.
These are a few of the foods that enrich reproductive health. Doctors recommend patients consume them in moderation and stay healthy and fit. Besides eating healthy, positive mental health plays a vital role in patients who wish to conceive.
