I studied Interior Design, but practiced for a very short time. I realized, my inclination was more towards the academic part of it and finally explored that I enjoyed teaching Design.

My journey into Design education started when I joined a Design Institute nearby my house as a faculty of Interior Design. I had a very good time over there, my students loved me for my teaching style. There was a subject called History of Interior and Architecture. Now, this was a subject which students hated as the common perception is that History is very boring. So I took it as a challenge and introduced practical methods of teaching History. I encouraged the students to prepare models, held contests between different groups and tried to make the subject as interactive as possible. And slowly the students also started to enjoy the subject. This also gave me the confidence to explore further into Design Education.

So, in 2007 I co-founded “Mosaic Institute of Design” along with my husband. I chose the name Mosaic because it is an Ancient Roman Art Form where small pieces of glass or ceramic are used in the form of a pattern over a wall or floor surface. We started by providing classroom coaching for Design and Architecture entrance exams, namely NID, NIFT, NATA, JEE Mains Paper 2 and CEPT. We also held short term and long term courses in Interior Design, Fashion Design and Fine Arts. Also conducted some seasonal courses. We started with a small classroom with a capacity of 10 students but in no time had to move to bigger classrooms with students pouring in from not only Gujarat, but all across India, some even from foreign countries. We spent very little on advertisements. Most of our students came from references and word of mouth.

In the year 2009, we launched our website Mosaic Institute of Design By this time I had compiled our coaching materials in the form of self-study books and started to sell them on our website.

Initially, the website was a static one with just 12 pages. At this point of time I had no technical gyan in relation to the website. But I was always curious as to what more value I can add to my website. So, I used to browse and read a lot on the internet. Around 2010 or 11, this new term got very popular that was SEO or Search Engine Optimization. I got curious and got myself enrolled for a course in SEO in a nearby institute. There I learnt the basics of SEO and how to apply it in your website.

Slowly, we added more pages to our website, upgraded the programming, worked on the design part, worked on the SEO, followed all guidelines to rank in the search engines. We added the blog section, and I particularly enjoyed writing articles for the blog.

Around 2017, we decided to stop the classroom coaching and concentrate fully on our website Mosaic Institute of Design

It was a difficult and bold decision on my part to switch completely from physical to online. But I felt the market was ready for the move. Also, by this time we had earned a certain amount of reputation and goodwill online. Also switching online had its own benefits. We could reach a wider audience and I somehow knew that the future belonged to the online players only.

Initially when we started with classroom coaching, I knew, if there were entrance exams for a subject there is bound to be a Coaching Industry and I was correct. We were among the first few who gave the push to the industry and obviously benefitted from the move.

Also when we moved online, I was aware that there existed a segment of students who will not join classroom coaching for sure, for various reasons: it can be the high fees, or lack of time as they were already busy preparing for boards or other competitive exams or they might be living in remote locations with no coaching classes available nearby. So, there was a market ripe enough for self-study material. We explored it and offered products accordingly. Then we discovered a sub category which wanted instant delivery of materials, so we introduced eBooks, videos and online tests and got a very good response.

Today, our website is approximately 800 pages strong, with more than 1,000 keywords appearing on Page 1 of Google Search results, receiving 100% organic monthly traffic. We don’t spend at all on advertisements, all our visitors reach us through 100% organic channels.

vision

My goal is to challenge & revolutionize the conventional & age old teaching methodology, to do away with rote learning & cramming. And to introduce more interactive products for students, because how you teach is equally important, as what you teach.
