Started 18 years back by sisters Vijayalakshmi Krishna & Soorya, Aavaranaa is a boutique fashion brand focussing on sarees & outfits for the modern woman. Starting in March 2005, Aavarana has not just grown but also adapted to the age of digital & online commerce. From a two-member team, today Aavaranaa has a team of 25 across sales, marketing, logistics, products & store management. Aavaranaa was born out of a need to create one-of-a-kind sarees with modern design sensibilities and over time the product ranges have grown to accommodate the growing needs of our clients & patrons. Today our product range includes ready-to-wear garments for women, men & kids, home décor items, accessories & sarees which are the backbone of our work.
The story of how this team of two has thrived in a highly competitive market like Chennai while establishing a strong presence online is one of resilience, constant innovation & staying relevant to the audience. From an annual turnover of 30 lacs to 6 crores, this journey has been full of ups & downs.
Product innovation is the backbone of wraps along with their value in creating stylish yet durable garments. Hence the focus is on hand-woven, hand-crafted, hand-made sarees and dresses. The designs and patterns of the outfits are developed in-house and manufactured by their in-house production team. Each dress has on average at least 2-3 surface embellishments apart from weaving which includes kalamkari, hand-embroidery forms like kutch work, kantha, shadow work, block printing like ajrakh, bagh, bagru, sanganer, and various printing techniques. Like tie and dye, discharge printing, etc. Base fabrics are woven as per their specifications at our looms in Kanchipuram and sent for further upgradation to various craft clusters. The end result is a composite product like the Kanchipuram silk saree enhanced with kutch work, mukaish work, and kalamkari.
Avarna has always put women first – both as customers and employees. 70% of their team is the female staff. But along the way, as they developed themselves and their patrons, their product range also included menswear, childrenswear, and home decor items. The core values are still strong – to produce something truly unique, they bring their design aesthetic by rooting the garments in the traditions of slow, mindful fashion.
About Fempreneur
Fempreuner 2023 was held on 19th March 2023 at AMA Ahmedabad, the second edition of its kind, and we are overjoyed at its booming success! The event was held to recognize and reward the efforts of Women Entrepreneurs in India that have the potential to enable the Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Vision to make India an Aatma Nirbhar Bharat.
