As a private healthcare professional, Dr. Usha Nair has chosen a life goal to go into end-of-life care, also known as palliative care, as she has personally witnessed the effects, aftereffects, and suffering of cancer patients, within her own family, friends, and community. Her conviction, that the field of Science of Nutrigenomics is so advanced and ever-dynamically developing, has made her resolute to help cancer and such like patients.
Continuing her work also under the space of Alternative & Complementary Therapies, she’s affirmed by the peace she brings to her patients. It’s the same conviction that led her to present her work at the United Nations CSW66 on the science in relation to SDG3 – Good Health & Wellbeing & the economies of scale of the science to provide the most affordable healthcare, especially for women at less than a $ a day, thereby launching nutrigenomics into a global discussion.
Dr. Usha’s story is one of grit, determination, and passion to make a difference in the lives of people she encounters especially with healthcare.
Where It All Began
Though Dr. Usha Nair is world-renowned today, with degrees of Ph.D., D.Sc., MBA, PG-DMLT, D.Ac., N.D., B.Sc., and a few more under her belt, she started off as a young girl, scared to go on the road alone and talk to strangers. It’s a long journey to becoming the woman who would speak at the United Nations regarding Nutrigenomics, but it all begins in Mumbai, where she was born. Raised by her government employee parents, it was never in Dr. Nair’s cards to go into alternative complementary therapies. But so, it played out when, in 1995, her mother fell ill and found an answer in touch healing. It was at her insistence that she started learning more and by May 1995, she was enthralled; the way it made people healthier, relieved pain, and made life easier.
Since she came from a lower middle class, conservative Iyer family, however, she took an offer as a probationary officer at Bank Of India Shareholding. But the first day made it clear – a typical government office, with stark walls, stacks of paperwork, and monotonous life would not work for her.
Her venture Into Complementary & Alternative Therapies
As she decided to refine her skills in the field, she was advised by her teacher to put in lots of effort and practice before starting to give therapy commercially. And so, Dr. Nair would travel to the Gujurat-Maharastra border, her favorite destination, Sanjan, every Saturday to give free sessions to the local tribal villagers. She did so through an organization which is now an NGO in special consultation status with UN-ECOSOC and was involved in the promotion and propagation of various modalities of alternative & complementary therapies, the promotion of original lifetime people’s work & research too.
She spent 18 years with the organization before her original research case studies in hospital & healthcare administration got her a Ph.D. by original research.
Her knowledge of alternative & complementary therapies only grew. Now her bag of tricks includes energy healing, distance healing, radionics, bio-therapy, knowledge of astrology &vastu, naturopathy, acupressure, acupuncture, spectrochromatry or colour therapy, aura scanning & interpretation, and many many more. Currently, her specializations focus on CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY & another high-end TerraHertz therapy based on Quantum Physics.
From 1996 to 1998, she worked on her Diploma in Naturopathy, despite there being no recognized institutions or set rules, and was only given part-time through private practitioners. Naturopathy became a way of life, and she integrated it at home and at the office, although part-time for service, and never commercialized her services. In 1998, she got married and went back to get a postgraduate Diploma in Medical Lab Technology, full-time at Seth G S Medical College & KEM Hospital Mumbai, entirely on merit. She cites this as her next stop in the mainstream. One thing that rings true throughout Dr. Nair’s life is her dedication to the client’s quality of treatment and comfort.
She fondly credits her husband as a pillar of support through the years, always encouraging her in her endeavors, be it in mainstream healthcare or in the fields of alternative & complementary therapies. She was always interested in higher education but felt content with her job and her work with alternative & complementary therapies, so she set it aside. Until of course, a series of incidents convinced her otherwise. She later on also upgraded her Diploma in Naturopathy into a DNYS (Diploma in Naturopathy & Yogic Science) & very recently also completed a Meditation Teachers Training Course.
Twists And Turns On The Road
Being a strong-willed woman in such a field is always bound to have unfair hurdles, and Dr. Usha Nair is no stranger to them. Due to governmental policies barring her from jobs on the account of her age, losing out on a job at BARC Hospital because she was a mere 40 days overage. At the age of 35, she took a different path, acquiring a full-time post with Symbiosis in Hospital and Healthcare Administration, on merit. She went on to get her MBA degree in 2009.
She worked in Hyderabad as the Manager of Operations (External Diagnostics) & Hospital Administrator with the then CARE Hospital Group for over a year and a quarter, being a go-getter in whatever she put her hands at. However, she decided to move back to Mumbai as she did not feel comfortable leaving her young daughter home alone in a new environment especially as a non-local since both her husband and she worked till late hours. At the time, she had almost closed an offer to head as GM Operations with Yashoda Hospital
In Mumbai, she headed Joy Hospital for some time as Hospital Administrator, then started a new clinic franchise from Hyderabad now Apollo Clinic, contributed as HOD Admin with Bhatia Hospital & was GM Operations with a small laparoscopic specialty hospital in Navi Mumbai. Opportunities always walked her way looking at her capabilities, dedication, sincerity, and contribution. While change is a constant, even an instance of loss of job didn’t falter Dr. Nair’s determination in the least. A batchmate, who had just started a healthcare finance company (NBFC) offered her a position as the City Head for Mumbai. And this opened up a plethora of hospital and healthcare setups pan Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan, and across to work for and accomplish bigger connections and challenges.
Becoming Her Own Boss
Dr. Nair’s belief is that diplomacy is a step higher than a hypocrite! This meant that she butted heads with many superiors who put profit or policy over people and didn’t place the patient/client above all else. But as she likes to say, she lives her life with blessings, and she came across Tajurba in 2020.
She speaks highly of the organization, and how the Co-founder pushed her to become an entrepreneur from a mere reseller. She is now a BRAND AMBASSADOR for Tajurba Business Network and a great giver in all ways. She says, this was integral in her transformation from reseller to mainstream entrepreneur, helping her build a personal brand, a registered organization under MSME, and envision a future IPO, which she confirms can be expected leaps and bounds from.
Her work is a passion turned into a profession, bolstered by about thirty years of learning. She recently wrote a book on the Science of Nutrigenomics, the first of its kind book globally, and is the first Indian book on the topic. It is the first global book on the efficacy of science in people’s life in reversing ill health into good health. Her book has been received into the UN library, where it will join her Ph.D. on Solutions for Situations in Hospital and Healthcare Administration.
She offers CST, which is Cranio Sacral therapy which is a form of alternative therapy that uses gentle touch to palpate the synarthrodial joints of the cranium at MMH. Additionally, she possesses expertise in Terra Hz Heat and Light Quantum Scalar Therapy that can energize your cells and activate healthy, dormant cells.
