I am giving this narrative just because it gives me pleasure to write this story about Tulips and its founder Mrs. Sangita Khalsa. Sangita is an Ahmedabad woman who went all the way down breaking all the shackles in her path to establish a successful design, manufacturing, and trading company of her own. She has established the company and is leading the same as Designer. I got an opportunity to see her work. It is exotic and elegant. The interiors can’t be better than this, I feel! So, let’s have a look at the story below!
In this golden age of globalization, digitalization, and start-up booms, India is clearly seeing a revolution vis-à-vis women entrepreneurs. The sixth economic census released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) highlights that women constitute around 14% of the total entrepreneurship in India. Today’s women entrepreneurs do not come only from the established business families or from the higher-income sections of the population, they come from all walks of life and from all parts of the country. From running sports media firms to construction companies and security and detective agencies – women are dabbling into fields that have traditionally been bastions of male domination.

About Mrs. Sangita Khalsa
Sangita is a Fine Arts Graduate. She had studied all through in English medium, and did her higher secondary studies with Science subjects. Instead of continuing with Science subjects, she majored in Fine Arts. This destined her interest in arts from an early age and was good at it. She was always interested in the crafts, arts & culture of different regions and communities.
This thirst was quenched during her college days. She assisted her Professor guide, Dr. Suresh Sheth, in his research projects that he used to be assigned by the Ministry of textiles. She assisted him on a couple of such projects; one of them was documenting the arts and crafts of Amreli region, Saurashtra, Gujarat. This ignited and fuelled her interest in the craft of hand quilt making and hand patchwork craft.
Soon after her college, she landed up with a project from Gurjari, Ahmedabad, (Ministry of textiles), for designing handmade patchwork quilts using traditional motifs of the Ahir community of Amreli region, for their Export market, in mid-1991. The brief included making full-size prototypes of the quilts, with the designs that were finalized by Gurjari, for further production. She also trained nearly 100 women to do this precise hand patchwork and set up a proper production system to recreate these designs in bulk with almost the same quality finish. This was the start of her business of hand patchwork Quiltmaking and selling it to NRI and foreign clients, and thus started Tulips.
Work process at Tulips
Tulips do custom designing also along with the project works. So when it is individual home projects each product is one of its types. Perfect design, with the highest level of finish, is the goal. But when it comes to project works, Tulips do have production output measured. There is a fixed minimum output in terms of production, decided for a particular product, per machine/labor. Every morning a karigar is given with a minimum lot of work to be done during the day. At the end of the day, he has to give the details of work done to the production manager, who writes down the details in the production book, daily.
Future of Tulips: What comes next?
During the lockdown of 2020, Sangita took the time to introspect and think about her work. This was indeed a golden opportunity for 28 years since she started Tulips, she got engrossed in her work and back-to-back projects, but never got a chance to stop and think. She was also moved by the number of craftspeople who were in financial crisis due to the situation. Her brand ‘Soft Story’ is now under a major revival. She is working on designing a collection of textile made-ups and textile art that promotes and proposes sustainability and circular economy, whilst supporting craft clusters, especially the ones who have needed assistance in these tough times. She will soon be re-launching her brand ‘Soft Story’, which will be a result of collaboration with indigenous communities. These products will be available all over India and also online.
