The Journey of a Physician, Researcher and Visionary Behind Medilink Hospital

From Jodhpur to Ahmedabad: The Beginning of a Medical Journey

Every successful medical career begins with a commitment to learning, but some journeys evolve into something much larger-a mission to build institutions that can serve generations of patients. The journey of Dr. Manish Agarwal, Director of Medilink Hospital and Founder-Director of the Medilink Hospital Research Centre in Ahmedabad, is one such story.

Dr. Agarwal began his medical education at S. N. Medical College, Jodhpur, where he completed his MBBS in 1994 and MD in Medicine in 1998. Those formative years laid the foundation for a career driven by clinical discipline, continuous learning and a deep understanding of patient care.

Rather than limiting himself to general medicine, Dr. Agarwal recognised the growing importance of diabetes and metabolic disorders. He chose to specialise in a field that was becoming increasingly significant to India’s healthcare landscape.

Learning Beyond Borders

Dr. Agarwal’s pursuit of knowledge took him beyond conventional medical education. He completed a Post Graduate Programme in Diabetology under the Medical Educational & Scientific Foundation of New York Inc., in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

His academic journey continued with training as a Fellow Student of the Endocrine University of South Wales in the UK, where he developed expertise as a Diabetologist and Metabolic Physician. He also earned certification from the American Thyroid Association.

Over the years, his professional achievements were further recognised through prestigious fellowships. He became a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP) and a Fellow of the Indian College of Physicians (FICP) in 2015. In 2019, he added a PhD in Diabetes from the European International University, Paris.

This combination of Indian medical training, international exposure and academic research shaped his approach to healthcare—bringing global knowledge into the practical realities of treating patients in India.

From Doctor to Institution Builder

For Dr. Agarwal, the journey eventually moved beyond individual consultations. His vision was to create a healthcare institution where specialised treatment, research, education and patient care could come together.

This vision led to the establishment of Medilink Hospital in Ahmedabad, where he serves as Director. Under his leadership, the hospital developed into an ISO 9001:2008 certified institution.

He also established the Medilink Hospital Research Centre, with the vision of developing a dedicated centre focused on diabetes and related metabolic conditions.

At Medilink, Dr. Agarwal’s responsibilities extend across multiple dimensions. He serves as Head of the Department of Medicine and Head of the Centre for Diabetes, Thyroid, Endocrinology & Metabolic Diseases. He has also contributed to medical education through the Medilink Institute of Nursing Science College.

His institution-building philosophy is simple: while one doctor can personally treat only a limited number of patients, a strong healthcare institution can multiply that impact through trained professionals, research, education and structured systems.

The Challenge of Building a Specialised Healthcare Centre

Building a specialised healthcare institution in a competitive city like Ahmedabad was not without challenges.

Diabetes, thyroid disorders and metabolic diseases require long-term relationships between doctors and patients. Establishing trust in such a specialised field requires more than qualifications-it requires consistency, evidence-based treatment and measurable outcomes.

Dr. Agarwal approached these challenges through continuous education, professional certifications, research and clinical experience.

Every new qualification strengthened his personal expertise, while every research initiative added to the credibility and knowledge base of the institution he was building.

Over time, this approach helped Medilink develop an identity that extended beyond routine clinical practice into research, education and specialised metabolic healthcare.

Research at the Heart of Healthcare

One of the defining aspects of Dr. Agarwal’s career is his commitment to research.

Through the Medilink Hospital Research Centre, he has contributed to approximately 100 clinical research engagements. His work reflects a belief that medical practice and medical research should complement one another.

For Dr. Agarwal, every patient presents an opportunity to learn, while every scientific development creates an opportunity to improve treatment.

This research-oriented approach has helped him remain connected with the rapidly changing world of diabetes, endocrinology and cardio-metabolic medicine.

Recognition Beyond Ahmedabad

Years of clinical and academic contribution have brought Dr. Agarwal recognition at both national and international levels.

In 2024, he was designated a Fellow of the Indian Association of Clinical Medicine at its XXX Annual Conference in Udaipur, Rajasthan, in recognition of his contribution to clinical medicine in India.

His international recognition continued with the Lionel Opie Fellowship at the Academy of Diabetic & Cardio-Renal Medicine in London, held in association with the CAD Conference.

The fellowship recognised his contributions to diabetes and cardio-renal medicine and was presented by internationally respected experts Prof. Stefano Del Prato and Prof. Ele Ferrannini.

For a physician whose journey began in the classrooms of Jodhpur, such recognition represented more than a personal achievement. It reflected the growing contribution of Indian healthcare professionals to global medical practice.

Serving the Medical Community

Dr. Agarwal’s contribution extends beyond his own hospital.

Throughout his career, he has taken on leadership and professional responsibilities within several medical organisations. He has been associated with the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI), including serving as Honorary Treasurer of its Gujarat Chapter.

He has also contributed to the Indian Medical Association’s Ahmedabad Branch, the Association of Physicians, Ahmedabad, the Rajasthan Medical Association and other professional organisations.

His involvement with organisations such as the International Diabetes Federation and several national and international medical bodies demonstrates his commitment to staying connected with the wider medical community.

For Dr. Agarwal, being a doctor is not limited to treating patients. It also means contributing to the profession, supporting fellow doctors and participating in initiatives that can improve healthcare as a whole.

Healthcare Beyond the Hospital Walls

Another important part of Dr. Agarwal’s journey is his commitment to community health awareness.

He has been associated with initiatives such as the Liver Forever Walkathon – “Health in Every Step”, hosted at Medilink Hospital in association with Zydus. The initiative combined a community walk with awareness about diabetes management, liver health and lifestyle modification.

Such initiatives reflect a broader philosophy: healthcare should begin before illness becomes serious.

By encouraging awareness, healthy lifestyles and preventive action, doctors can reach people before they become patients.

A Voice for Modern Diabetes Care

Dr. Agarwal’s expertise has also made him an active speaker at medical conferences and professional platforms.

He has spoken on subjects such as “Hypoglycemia Unawareness: Diagnosis & Management” at Diabetica 2025, the annual conference of the RSSDI Gujarat Chapter in Vadodara.

His primary area of interest today lies at the intersection of diabetes and cardiac health, particularly cardio-diabetic care.

This focus reflects the close relationship between diabetes and cardiovascular disease and the importance of treating patients through a broader metabolic and cardiovascular perspective.

Vision for the Future

Dr. Agarwal’s vision for Medilink extends beyond becoming another healthcare facility.

He sees the institution as a centre where clinical care, research, medical education and community awareness can work together.

The Medilink Institute of Nursing Science College represents the educational dimension of this vision, while the Medilink Hospital Research Centre represents its research ambition.

As lifestyle-related diseases continue to grow across India, specialised institutions will play an increasingly important role in helping patients manage chronic conditions while also developing better approaches to prevention and treatment.

For Dr. Agarwal, the future of healthcare lies not only in treating disease but also in understanding it better, educating professionals and empowering communities.

Lessons for Aspiring Healthcare Entrepreneurs

Dr. Manish Agarwal’s journey offers several lessons that extend beyond medicine.

Keep learning. His journey from MBBS and MD to international fellowships and a PhD demonstrates the value of continuous education.

Build expertise before building an institution. His specialised knowledge became the foundation on which Medilink was developed.

Think beyond individual success. Instead of limiting his impact to his own clinical practice, he built systems for research, education and professional development.

Stay connected with the community. Medical leadership is strengthened when doctors contribute beyond their consultation rooms.

Combine medicine with entrepreneurship. Dr. Agarwal’s story shows that clinical excellence and institution-building can work together when they are guided by a clear purpose.

A Legacy Still in the Making

Dr. Manish Agarwal’s journey-from a medical student in Jodhpur to a recognised diabetologist, researcher and healthcare institution builder in Ahmedabad-is ultimately a story of continuous evolution.

His career has moved through multiple stages: medical education, specialised diabetology training, international academic exposure, clinical practice, research, professional leadership and institution building.

Today, through Medilink Hospital and its Research Centre, his work reaches far beyond the individual patient sitting across from him.

His journey demonstrates that expertise becomes more powerful when it is shared, knowledge becomes more meaningful when it is researched, and healthcare creates a larger impact when treatment is combined with education and awareness.

From the first lessons learned in Jodhpur to the institution he has helped build in Ahmedabad, Dr. Manish Agarwal continues to demonstrate that a doctor’s influence does not have to end at the consultation room.

Sometimes, the greatest legacy of a physician is not only the patients he treats, but the institution, knowledge and people he leaves behind to continue the work.
