How did you come up to the idea of independent home construction?

There are a lot of market players to build and construct apartments, but hard to find any specialized tech-enabled construction players in the market. It’s a gigantic market that is untapped so far. Therefore, we stepped in and decided to streamline the entire home construction process, hassle-free. We aim to become a one-stop solution to independent home construction using technology. It also became a need of the hour for the construction industry to adapt to the technology and bring more transparency to the market.

How are you different from the other players in the industry?

There are several companies and start-ups entering the home construction domain but none of them are in the tech-enabled construction space. The sector is still run by unorganized players. The technology has helped us to create a unique profile in the market. We have kept cutting-edge technology at the core of our solutions and it has helped us in the mission to build better homes faster. We have a transparent and automated end-to-end process that ensures that all major stakeholders such as customers, sales teams, architects, designers, project managers, and on-site engineers as well as the quality control and accounting personnel are on the same page. Thus, ensuring everyone is aware of the status of their projects at any given time.

What’s the biggest misconception people have about you and how did you solve them?

There was a misconception among the clients that whether house joy is a real-estate player in the market. Our initial step was to propagate our distinctive business model on a tech-enabled independent home construction company. It did not take long for the people to understand the difference between our business model and other real estate players. People accepted our concept and booked over 40 projects in the early days of our launch itself. Now, the company is experiencing exponential growth year on year.

How much funding so far raise?

We have so far raised a total funding of $30.3 million, backed by investors like Matrix, Amazon, Vertex Ventures, and Growth Story.

Details about the app: launch date, new categories launched over the last few months

House joy app has three interfaces. Consumer, supplier, and back end. Consumers can book their required service through the app, and the same will show in the interface of the service providers, where the service providers will be able to manage the jobs by either accepting or canceling the order. Once the service provider accepts the job request from the consumer the app tracks the process right from the service provider’s travel to the workplace, work in progress, and completion of work which will be updated by the service provider. The third part of the interface is the backend interface, where House joy’s operation team will monitor and manage the entire process internally, and if any issues arise in the process, they can be rectified quickly. The app is available in IOS, Android and can also be accessed through the web version.

The Housejoy tech app has the following categories under service – Beauty, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, home cleaning, and pest control. House joy wants to specialize in the said areas which are highly necessary for home dwellers.

Housejoy tech has added a couple of services in its kitty, namely borewell and labor on hire. The beta version app was functional from late 2014 and the official launch was in the first quarter of 2015.

How has the Indian home services market progressed over the years? Do you see it becoming more popular over the last two years? If yes, why?

The home service industry prevails for ages, but the industry was unorganized and worked on the traditional method. Housejoy tech is trying to organize the entire process through technology where the customer can avail of the services without hassles. The concept of home services with the integration of technologies is still in a nascent stage in India. But the market requirement is gigantic and the market is currently 24 billion, which needs to be addressed. The service has been offered in tier 1 and tier 2 cities partially. The metro and tier 1 cities always preferred to use one of the home service provider services. And also the same has been offered by the apartment itself by being associated with one of the service providers. The tier 2 &3 cities have an enormous demand, still, the market has been untouched, and house joy will penetrate the market in the future.  

The home dwellers’ attitude towards a home service provider has tremendously changed over the last two years in particular. Earlier, they were depending on nearby individual service providers who cannot assure quality, adherence to timing any irregular pricing. The house joy/ home service providers are solving this problem and all the home needs are met without any compromise. Therefore, the consumer has begun to place their trust in home service companies.

Your comments on the lockdown and how it impacted the segment

The unprecedented pandemic situation brought the entire home services to a complete halt because nobody was aware of what we were dealing with. And how long the situation was going to be. The services resumed when partial relaxation was announced, and consumers began to use the online services with first-time users on the rise. The demand surged, but the service has been limited due to the restriction on commutation timings.

On the flip side, the lockdown has greatly impacted the livelihood of many. The entire supply ecosystem has suffered which has been the bread and butter for most. Later, they started to pick jobs like essential delivery to meet their needs. House joy has also floated essential services during this pandemic where we could re-allocate some of our service providers from plumbing, carpentry to essential service delivery. It was a temporary arrangement to support one and all during the pandemic.

What checks do you have in place before you onboard a player?

We primarily have a few tests like written tests, group discussions, practical tests (particularly beauticians) pertaining to their industry. And whoever clears the tests will be requested to share their document’s identity and permanent address proof including pan card. Then, we will proceed with police verification of whether the candidate has a previous FIR or any other particular case against him/her. As the final step, our outsourced agency will do the job verification which she /he has been associated previously. Whether the candidate left the job abruptly or on a bad note with the employer. If all verification is positive, then we will onboard them.

Which city and category sees the maximum number of bookings?

It generally varies based on occasions or festive seasons, but the beauty category stands out in booking throughout the year. Though consumers like to have salon experiences during the weekend, some, especially homemakers & women who are working from home. And prefer to have the service at home during weekdays.

Home cleaning category bookings go high during Diwali, and the home appliances category will shoot up in April- May. Under the home appliances category, AC installation will have a higher number of bookings particularly in the north part of the country (Delhi).

Future plans

The company has diversified into interiors, renovation, and construction in 2018. Which has been our mainstream of growth for the last two years. This situation may change because of the kind of technology placed for home services. House joy has multiple assets as IP (intellectual properties) in technology. And products that enable us to scale to multiple cities and categories as well. This segment is expected to be witnessed exponential growth in the coming months. And the company will expand its services in 15 cities within the next six months.
