From Ahmedabad to Japan and South Korea, and Back Again to Build a New Standard of Surgical Care
A Journey That Began with the Desire to Learn More
Dr. Anand completed his M.S. in General Surgery from Smt. N.H.L. Municipal Medical College in Ahmedabad in 2002. While general surgery gave him a strong clinical foundation, he wanted to explore the more complex areas of digestive and hepatobiliary surgery.
His pursuit of specialised knowledge led him to train as a Fellow in G.I. and Minimal Access Surgery at Sterling Hospital between 2003 and 2005. He then spent three important years, from 2005 to 2008, at the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology and Liver Transplantation at Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow.
But for Dr. Anand, learning had no geographical boundary.
His growing interest in liver and HPB surgery took him to Kurume University in Fukuoka, Japan, where he trained in HPB surgery under renowned liver surgeon Dr. Koji Okuda. He later travelled to Seoul, South Korea, and trained in liver transplantation at Asan Medical Centre under Prof. Sung-Gyu Lee.
These experiences exposed him to advanced surgical techniques, complex liver procedures and international standards of patient care. Yet, perhaps more importantly, they shaped a philosophy that would guide his career: “Don’t just be a technician, but a clinician first.”
For Dr. Anand, a surgeon’s responsibility does not end with performing a technically successful procedure. Understanding the patient, communicating clearly, considering the complete clinical picture and standing beside the patient throughout the journey are equally important.
Returning Home with a Bigger Vision
After years of specialised training across India, Japan and South Korea, Dr. Anand returned to Ahmedabad with more than qualifications. He returned with a vision.
He began practising HPB surgery across leading institutions including HCG Medisurge, Sterling Hospital and Rajasthan Hospital. His clinical work focused on complex conditions involving the liver, pancreas and biliary system, including liver cancer, pancreatic cancer, gallbladder disease, pancreatitis, choledochal cysts and portal hypertension.
As his experience grew, Dr. Anand recognised an important need within the healthcare ecosystem. Patients with complex liver and pancreatic conditions often needed specialised evaluation and coordinated treatment rather than fragmented care.
This realisation inspired him to establish a dedicated Liver & Pancreatic Clinic at Shailya Hospital, creating a focused platform for patients requiring specialised gastrointestinal and HPB care.
The goal was simple but ambitious: bring together specialised expertise, evidence-based treatment and personalised patient care under one roof.
The Challenge of Building Trust
Specialising in HPB surgery comes with enormous responsibility. Patients reaching an HPB surgeon are often dealing with serious and complicated conditions, including cancers and life-threatening abdominal emergencies.
For a specialist building a practice, earning trust cannot happen overnight.
Dr. Anand’s early journey involved proving that highly specialised, internationally trained surgical care could be delivered in Ahmedabad with the same seriousness and precision found at leading institutions around the world.
But technical excellence alone was not enough.
He understood that patients and their families also needed someone who would listen to them, explain their condition clearly and guide them through difficult decisions.
Over time, trust grew through every consultation, every complex surgery and every patient who returned home with a better quality of life. Patient experiences and word-of-mouth recommendations became an important part of his professional journey.
More Than 6,000 Surgeries and Two Decades of Experience

Years of dedication eventually translated into a significant clinical record.
With more than 6,000 successful surgeries and over two decades of clinical experience, Dr. Anand has established himself as a specialist in surgical gastroenterology and HPB surgery.
His work has also received professional recognition, including recognition as a Best Surgical Gastroenterologist, HPB & Cancer Surgeon.
Alongside clinical practice, he has remained connected with academic medicine.
His research papers, presentations and participation in national and international conferences reflect his commitment to continuous learning.
For him, surgery and research are not separate journeys. Every patient teaches something, and every new development in medicine creates an opportunity to improve patient care.
Bringing Technology into Patient Care
One of the most interesting developments in Dr. Anand’s journey has been his willingness to combine traditional clinical expertise with modern technology.
At Shailya Hospital, he has been involved in introducing AI-driven hospital beds, designed to support real-time gastrointestinal symptom tracking, post-surgery monitoring and alerts for potential emergencies.
For a surgeon whose career has been built around hands-on clinical practice, embracing artificial intelligence demonstrates an important quality-an openness to evolve.
Technology, in his approach, is not meant to replace doctors. Instead, it can support doctors by providing timely information, improving monitoring and potentially helping healthcare teams respond faster.
This combination of surgical experience and technological innovation represents the direction in which Dr. Anand sees modern healthcare moving.
The Doctor Behind the Surgeon
While surgical achievements can be measured through numbers, the human side of medicine is harder to quantify.
Patients who have interacted with Dr. Anand often remember his patience and willingness to listen. For some, what stood out was his insistence on detailed examination and investigation before reaching a conclusion. For others, it was the time he took to understand their concerns rather than simply looking at reports.
That patient-first approach has become one of the strongest pillars of his practice. His philosophy is rooted in the belief that patients should not feel like another case number. They should feel heard, respected and guided.
This is particularly important in complex surgical conditions, where fear and uncertainty can be as overwhelming as the disease itself.
A Vision Built on Compassion and Quality
Dr. Anand’s vision for healthcare is straightforward: every patient should be treated with courtesy and respect and should receive the best possible medical care within available resources-without compromising on quality.
His approach is built around three important principles:
Rapid access to care, so patients do not have to wait unnecessarily for critical medical attention.
Evidence-based diagnosis and treatment, ensuring that clinical decisions are supported by appropriate medical knowledge and investigation.
Collaborative healthcare, where surgeons, physicians, primary-care doctors and other specialists work together rather than operating in isolation.
This collaborative approach reflects an understanding that complex healthcare problems rarely have a one-dimensional solution.
Lessons from a Global Journey

Dr. Kaushal Anand’s career offers valuable lessons that extend far beyond medicine.
Specialise with purpose. He did not stop after becoming a general surgeon. He continued learning until he developed expertise in a highly specialised field.
Learn from the best. His journey took him from Ahmedabad to Lucknow, Japan and South Korea, demonstrating the importance of seeking knowledge wherever the best learning opportunities exist.
Bring knowledge back home. International exposure becomes truly meaningful when it is used to improve the lives of people in one’s own community.
Build trust patiently. In healthcare, reputation cannot be manufactured. It is earned through consistency, ethical practice and genuine patient care.
Keep evolving. Even after decades of experience and thousands of surgeries, Dr. Anand continues to explore technology and new approaches to patient monitoring and treatment.
Looking Ahead

The story of Dr. Kaushal Anand is ultimately not just the story of a surgeon. It is the story of a professional who chose to keep learning, travel beyond familiar boundaries, master a challenging speciality and return home with a larger purpose.
From Ahmedabad’s medical classrooms to specialised centres in Lucknow, Japan and South Korea, his journey has been shaped by curiosity and a commitment to excellence. From treating complex liver and pancreatic conditions to developing a dedicated specialty clinic and embracing AI-driven healthcare, he continues to expand what specialised surgical care can mean.
And through it all, one principle remains at the heart of his journey:
A surgeon should not simply be a technician. A surgeon must first be a clinician who understands the person behind the disease.
That belief has shaped Dr. Kaushal Anand’s career-and continues to guide his mission of bringing advanced, compassionate and patient-centred HPB care to Ahmedabad and beyond.
